Freiraum

The works "Freiraum 1-3" are based on Berlin's derelict areas, which are rapidly disappearing. Partly as a result of the policy of demolition but mainly due to war damage and the particular historical situation of the divided city, empty land has been a feature of many parts of central Berlin until very recently. On the basis of the years 1953, 1984 and 2006, I document the reduction in these spaces within the city which has taken place over time. One of the phenomena that makes Berlin unique among European capitals - the space it provides for improvisation, the temporary and the sub-cultural, the space of endless design potential - is disappearing before our eyes.
